Harbour View High School
Electronic Devices Policy

The use of electronic devices for educational purposes during instructional time is permitted at Harbour View High School only when specified by classroom teachers.

The following provides clarification on the use of electronic devices during the school day:

  • Devices may be used during non-instructional times such as breaks and noon hour
  • Devices may be used during homeroom at the discretion of the homeroom teacher, and not when the teacher is facilitating discussions, leading group activities, or presenting to the class.
  • Phone must be away and on silent mode (not vibrate) during class time.  If a student chooses to bring a phone to class which is seen or heard, they must place it in the storage area within the classroom if directed by the teacher.
  • Devices may be taken out only when approved by the teacher and used for the purpose specified by the teacher.  When the teacher directs that devices be put away, students must do so promptly.
  • If a student is seen with a phone without having been given permission the student will be referred to administration.
  • Students will be given a reminder by the subject teacher for a first offence in a course.
  • A teacher may allow students to listen to music using electronic devices while completing independent work.  There are to be no active screens during this time (ie. Students can listen to a playlist, but not be actively searching songs).
  • Electronic devices are not permitted during any testing and are not permitted to be used as calculators within classrooms.

Consequences:

Students failing to abide by the policy will progress through the following stages:

  • Noon detention (assigned by administration)
  • 1-day of In-School Suspension (ISS)
  • Increased duration of ISS or an Out-of-school Suspension

Calls from parent(s)/guardian(s)
Students may return calls during breaks or at noon.  In cases of emergency, parents/guardians should contact the school office and students can be located to return calls.
If a student needs to call a parent/guardian during class time, they should seek the classroom teacher’s permission to do so, and make the call either from the main office or ask for a private location to do so.

Guidance
Students waiting in the Guidance area may not be using electronic devices.

Hallways during class time
Students excused from class cannot use electronic devices in hallways or common areas of the school.
