A message from the principal

As a follow-up to the Q&A document sent to you by the school district, we wanted to try to clarify a bit further.

No student will be penalized due to the school closure because of COVID-19.

In New Brunswick’s Anglophone Sector, students only gain credits for courses designated as Grade 11 and 12.  Students require 17 credits to graduate.  Within those 17 are some specific courses or areas of study, and also a variety of elective courses students can choose.  For this year, any student who had 12 credits at the end of Semester 1 and was in a position to graduate in June will graduate – even if they are unable to complete some required courses.

Transcripts in New Brunswick only show credit courses, so again only those at the Grade 11 and 12 level.  For this semester, all students will have ‘Enrolled’ recorded on their transcript to indicate they were in those courses prior to the school closure.  They will not earn credits for those courses, but we will count them towards the 17 required for graduation.

However, students have the ability to earn credits, and have CREDIT recorded on their transcripts by completing the work teachers will be providing throughout the rest of the semester and demonstrating they have met the outcomes of the course.  Final marks for will not be calculated – all Grade 11 and 12 courses for this semester will either be ‘Credit’ or ‘Enrolled.’  Unfortunately, not all courses can be completed through an online format.

The decision about whether to work towards a ‘Credit’ needs to be one made by the student and guardians.  Post-secondary institutions are experiencing the same situation we are – and will understand that there may be a variety of reasons why a student did not complete a course during this time.  If there is the ability, though, completing courses which are pre-requisites for other high school courses or post-secondary programs should be considered.  We know that we will need to begin the next school year by closing gaps which will exist, but participating in the online learning opportunities during the rest of the semester would be a great benefit.

Last week we launched online learning for Core subjects.  We will now be adding to that by offering work in every course.  Students should pick a maximum of 3 courses to work towards a credit.  The goal is to not overwhelm students by asking them to complete work for every course, but to provide access to courses which may be pre-requisites to others.  For courses at the 9/10 level, there is not clarification yet on if report cards will note those students who completed all assigned work through online learning, however students are strongly encouraged to continue their learning – particularly in those courses which lead into classes for next year.

Registration for 2020-2021

Normally by now, we would be asking Grade 9, 10, and 11 students to be selecting courses for next school year.  We will be starting that process beginning next week, but wanted to give people time to adjust to the online learning process first.  Administration and Guidance will be reaching out directly to all students to work through this process.  On the HVHS website under Academics, you will find our Course Selection booklet.  This has a great deal of information about courses, pathways, etc.  When you have a chance, please take a look along with your child(ren).  Copies of the registration forms for each grade level are attached.

Early next week we will be sending out a schedule so students are aware which day they should be expecting a call to select courses.

Have a good weekend,

Michael
